Default how to get lower left engine case off

Does anyone know how to get the lower left engine case(where the water pump is) off a 2002 st4s. The ducati dealer told me that they use a special puller. I don't have access to a puller and need to know how to get it off without.
Thanks

The only way I could see that happening without the 'special puller' is to make your own special puller. They aren't that expensive ($25) or complex (a steel plate with 3 holes with the middle hole threaded).

It is possible to remove the casing without a puller, I have done it in the past but it requires Care and patience.
You need to find a suitable place to GENTLY pry the casing to release the grip of the sealant. Once this is done at both ends it's possible to pull the case off by hand with a little effort. Most of the resistance is from the magnetic field within the stator housing.
As Brett wisely recommends, if you are not very experienced the puller is worth it to make the job easier. I now have one of my own.
DO NOT insert hard tools like screwdrivers etc between the mating surfaces to lever off the case!!!! If you damage these surfaces you will have an oil leak for life.
